Fun Dad Rules! Double the fun!

Fun Dad Rules! Double the fun!

Let’s face it, times spent with dad’s are usually a lot of fun and dad jokes are just something else (let's all admit that we secretly enjoy it quite a lot). In my household, weekends was when my dad took hold of the kitchen, my brother and I would be deployed to get all the ingredients as soon as he asked for them, we ran around trying to be better than each other at the chore given to us and we’d patiently wait while he did more complex chores like the cutting and cooking. While the food cooked, he’d fill us in with stories from his childhood and these memories are nothing but bliss.

Such memories are really important in helping children grow with a sense of belonging and responsibility.

The 21st century and the recent decade has seen quite an impressive turn of events. Traditional gender roles are being questioned and with that we also see an impressive increase in paternal involvement in children’s lives. Studies have shown that when fathers are affectionate and supportive, it greatly affects a child’s cognitive and social development. It also instills an overall sense of well-being and self confidence. While daughters usually look up to their fathers for a sense of security and comfort, son’s usually model their fathers behaviors, for both of these to develop in a healthy manner, paternal involvement in daily activities is crucial.

We now see a lot of father-daughter/son reels and tiktok videos (@pabloeveronicaoficial - the father-daughter duo has got all our hearts in a puddle with their creative and super cute dance reels). The lockdown and Work From Home culture has paved the way for fathers to spend more time with their children, something that was neglected earlier and expected from mothers alone. This change can benefit your child in plenty.

Activities to get you the best-dad-ever badge:

  • Cook up some fun:

Be it cooking up a traditional meal and telling your children stories from the time you learned to make that dish or baking a cake and frosting it with your tiny tots, the kitchen can be a great place to bond with your children and get closer to them, it's also a place where your children could learn. Take the opportunity to teach them a few skills.

  • Eat together as a family:

Try eating meals together as a family as much as possible, the dining table helps bring together your family both physically and emotionally. Use the time together to talk about the day and gain more insight into your toddlers life.

  • Read your way to fantasy island:

Encourage the practice of reading by allotting reading hours. Bedtime is one of the convenient times to indulge in this activity. This practice can go a long way in your child’s life. Reading together fosters the habit and becomes a great conversation starter too.

  • All work and more play:

You’ll see your toddler the happiest at this time. Join in on the fun and introduce some new games to them, this will be a small escape from work hours as well!

  • Teach with love:

Be it academics or sports, children are always looking out to learn something new and it's the best time to inculcate new skills and values. However, teach them to make mistakes too and appreciate small steps on the way.

A father’s role in a child’s life is irreplaceable, your tiny tot is always going to look up to you as a role model. It’s a wonderful opportunity to build some great memories together while leaving a beautiful imprint on their lives.
